Metallurgy

Researchers have developed a technique for successfully 3D printing high-strength aluminum alloys  (including types Al7075 and Al6061) that opens the door to additive manufacturing of engineering-relevant alloys. These alloys are very desirable for aircraft and automobile parts and have been among thousands that were not amenable to additive manufacturing.

An added benefit is that their method can be applied to additional alloy families such as high-strength steels and nickel-based superalloys difficult to process currently in additive manufacturing.

Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is the use of a combination of cells, engineering, and materials methods, and suitable biochemical and physicochemical factors to improve or replace biological tissues.

The goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs. Artificial skin and cartilage are examples of engineered tissues that have been approved by the FDA

Carbon, Diamond and Fullerenes

Carbon can able to form many allotropes due to its valency. Well-known forms of carbon include diamond and graphite. In recent years, many allotropes have been discovered and researched including ball shapes such as buckminster fullerene and sheets such as graphene. Larger scale structures of carbon include nanotubes, nanobuds and nanoribbons.

Materials Chemistry

Materials chemistry involves the use of chemistry for the design and synthesis of materials with interesting or potentially useful physical characteristics, such as magnetic, optical, structural or catalytic properties.

Functional materials are building blocks of modern society and play a critical role in the evolution of technology. Materials chemistry is unique in providing the intellectual foundation to design, create, and understand new forms of matter, let it be organic, inorganic, or hybrid materials.

Materials Science

Materials science is a syncretic discipline hybridizing metallurgy, ceramics, solid-state physics, and chemistry. It is the first example of a new academic discipline emerging by fusion rather than fission.

Beginning in the 1940s, materials science began to be more widely recognized as a specific and distinct field of science and engineering, and major technical universities around the world created dedicated schools for its study.

Materials science is a highly active area of research. Together with materials science departments, physics, chemistry, and many engineering departments are involved in materials research. Materials research covers a broad range of topics.

Materials and Alloys

Alloys are metallic compounds made up of one metal and one or more metal or non-metal elements.

Individual pure metals may possess useful properties such as good electrical conductivity, high strength, and hardness, or heat and corrosion resistance. Commercial metal alloys attempt to combine these beneficial properties in order to create metals more useful for particular applications than any of their component elements.
